| The width of the umbral shadow
as it passes over the earth's surface during the February eclipse is quite
narrow, only 90 to 151 km (that's 55.9-93.8 statute miles for you Imperial
Unit people).
But February's umbral shadow is narrow even by eclipse standards. It averages slightly higher for most total eclipses (somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 km. or 190 miles). This is one of the reasons it is such a rare treat to see a total solar eclipse! Once a total eclipse has been observed in a particular country, it is rare to see one again in the same region within just a few years. |
