(which was a lot of money back in 1982!!!)

Yippers, you're right.
There have been several geostationary weather satellite with the GOES program. GOES-9 (GOES-West) is placed over the Pacific ocean and is well positioned for Hawaii, while GOES-8 (also known as GOES-East) is placed over the Southern Caribbean, which is perfect to view the February 1998 eclipse 'from above'. Can you name a weather satellite which is well positioned for Asia's Pacific Rim? How about a European weather satellite?
