Foliage Brushes: adding trees to your painted/rendered scene

Foliage brushes were first introduced in Howler 8.2 -  and in version 9.5 they got an extra boost of realism: with self shading, ambient occlusion style. This video tutorial is part of the River Canyon series. See the end of this newsletter and earlier newsletters for many more tutorials in that series.

Erosion evolved: Free update of DRMisc.dll for Howler 9.5

One of the many new features introduced in PD Howler 9.5 was an erosion filter. You can see the presence of it and access its features in two places:

  • Filter > Stylize > Erosion
and of course more integrated:
  • Filter > Transform > 3D Designer

For animations, the latter lives of course also in Animation > Timeline > Filters > Transform > 3D Designer, as we've seen in many recent tutorials where we fly across a mountain or landscape of hills.

Erosion supports several options, which affect in one way or another how much erosion appears on the terrain. Some might carve the eroded gullies a little deeper, others might change the number of 'attack points' where erosion starts occurring, by adjusting the amount of rainfall. There is also the length of the eroded paths. However, there was also a slight bug in v9.5: the erosion was not uniformly applied around all sides of a mountain. This would cause about 75% of the hill to appear eroded, while a bare 25% (upper left quadrant) remained unaffected by erosion. Imagine looking down on a smooth mountain like an egg.

Here is an example: (click each image to see it at its original size)

The first image shows the old mode, straight from v9.5 - each bump appears only partly eroded. The upper left quadrant of each bump seems smooth, without erosion. In the second image, this has been fixed. That's but this free update (patch) does.

Howler 9.5 Available at DAZ

As announced earlier, Howler 9.5 is now available at Daz, and still on sale at last check with 30% off, but this launch intro discount will expire soon. It is also a slightly lower regular price. Take advantage of it while it lasts. Find it here:

For Users of Lightwave 3D - free Plugins

We have just released Newtonian Follower for Lightwave, free for single seat users, along with several other plugins for Lightwave. If you're not familiar with the latest developments of Lightwave, check out their new version here:

http://www.lightwave3d.com

With Newtonian Follower, you can link one object to another and have the sibling react with Newtonian physics, which can be great in bone chains for creating secondary motion in a character rig.

Also released for free is a horizontal slider custom object plugin that visualizes a value between 0-1 in a way similar to a horizontal scroll bar or slider control.

Cybermonday promotion at Squirreldome

Here's another chance to save big on Howler 9.5, new or upgrade:
http://dan-ritchie.wix.com/howlerpromotion
This is directly from Dan Ritchie, the author of Project Dogwaffle / Howler.

Check his gallery too, showing off great artwork created by artists who use Dogwaffle, including himself of course:

The River Canyon Tutorials continue - exploring more

Here are a few more videos and tutorials, expanding on the river canyon. We're adding trees in the foreground. We're adding another layer of hills up close. We're adding gradient skies.... and we're adding animated skies.

That's it for now. Thanks for reading.
